Lie Back on The Floor and Observe The Heavens:
Why Ginny and Harry Are Destined To Be Together
By Patricia

No. What you are about to read is not one of those so known and boring editorials in which people are always defending that Harry will end up with Ginny based on the same old arguments, like how they look like Harry's parents, reminding us that by this, Harry would finally be a Weasley, or that Harry always describes Ginny in a poetic way - not that this shouldn't be considered, I myself agree that those are some good clues and can't be ignored.  However, I believe we are now at a point where if we want to forecast who the next Mrs. Potter will be, focus on the obvious clues is just not good enough. We need to study each character's behavior, understand what they did so we can predict what they will do. So, good luck for all the contestants, and let the show begin!

Our first task is to eliminate the girls that don't suit this job. And there's no one better than Hermione Granger to go first. A real pain in the ass, H/H shippers are like those annoying flies on a hot day, no matter what you do they just don't go away! OK, from that list of a hundred reasons to support the shipper, maybe two, three if you are on a good day, are acceptable. Indeed, there's nothing to disagree on. They are really close, have been through a lot together and until now, Hermione has shown to understand him more than anyone else (except Dumbledore perhaps). But what we must keep in mind is that Jo doesn't write or put someone into Harry's life without a reason. Hermione, with all her wisdom, sense and the ability to think quickly and use them on dangerous times, is a very powerful person. She's the voice of reason, and such character must be near Harry, who since the first book hasbeen through difficult situations all the time. And guess what? This really happened! Through each book, Harry is guided by Hermione's advices. Being always with him, she can be apart of everything Harry knows and advice him whatto do. What happened when he ignored her advice? He went after Sirius and gothim and his friends in trouble! My point is that their friendship, even thoughmost people don't see, helps Harry in many ways, and she is one of the few people he can actually count on and that's why he loves her- she's like the sister he never had. And for those who are still insisting that he's attracted to her and vice-versa, I show you the words of the most famous R/H shipper we know: Jo Rowling: "Harry and Hermione? Do you think so? Ron and Hermione I would say, have... there's more... tension there." (Dateline NBC, June 20, 2003). Another interview in which she put an end on the H/H shipper is when she was asked if Harry and Hermione will go on a date: "No, They're very platonic friends. But I won't answer for anyone else!" (National Press Club, October 20, 1999). With this, we can once and for all get Mione out of the competition (and if you still believe Hermione is going to be the one, after seeing that Jo herself said she's not (not using the words, but it doesn't take much intelligence to get what she meant), please stop reading this right now).

Another girl that is also pointed out as an option is Cho Chang. Sure, why not? After all, since the first time Harry saw her, he felt she was different. She was his first crush and it was from her that he got his first kiss. Yes, yes, I'm aware of all that, thank you very much, and me saying that they won't be together next book because they have almost nothing in common and that alone they stay, but together they fall apart is an awful argument. Therefore, all I have left is to prove they are over with another quote from our friend, Jo: "That's life, I'm afraid. They were never going to be happy, it was better that it ended early" (World Book Day, March 4,2004). Now that the two on the top of the bets of who will be with Harry are gone, let's move on to the rest of the girls.

I hope everyone agrees that in the next books Harry is not in a condition to act like most of the boys his age and go running after every pretty face he sees. His worries are far beyond that. But of course, falling in love is part of life and as it was said, "What is life without a little romance?". What I mean with all this babbling is that I don't think it's likely for Harry to be with someone who is not near him somehow, someone who hasn't been around over the recent episodes, a girl that knows what he's been through, and not just by the paper. And this takes us to only one person: Ginny Molly Weasley. And a curious fact that supports this is a little detail that for most people passes unnoticeable: on all the five books we have so far, the love life of the characters isn't mentioned. Jo can't afford to write about things that are not important to the plot, such as teenager crushes, unless it is Harry's crush, will affect Harry's life some how or be important to the story in the future. A good example is the regular scene Ron makes when he gets jealous about Hermione, as they are Harry's best friends and Ron and Hermione's relationship affects Harry and their friendship inevitably. But besides them, we don't follow the relationship or what is going on inside anyone else's heart. It might be mentioned that, for example, Fred Weasley went to the Ball with Angelina, but we don't get more than this. We don't know who were neither his previous girlfriends nor any personal detail about him. But Ginny seems to be an exception for this rule. Since the first book, we know almost everything that happens in Ginny's love life. We know when her crush for Harry started, we know everyone she dated, we keep getting hints about what's going on inside her heart by her lines, and what she's been up to by comments made by Ron, Hermione and even Hagrid. So, I ask: Why? Why do we know so much about a character that is not Harry's friend and until now has appeared very few times? Everything is written for a reason, so I don't think Jo has wasted so many lines with details such as Hermione explaining Ginny's attitude if this won't be important in the future.

OK, this rationalization shows that Ginny is the character with more chances of getting the so waited Harry's next kiss. Now, we must get rid of a question concerning Ginny's feelings for Harry which came with the fifth book, because it's no good for Harry to fall for Ginny if she doesn't like him anymore. Lots of readers, since the first book, have fallen in love with Ron's little sister, who from far has watched and admired her hero, anguishing as she was ignored. What a surprise for all these readers when she has proved last book she has grown up(in may aspects), and not only gave up waiting for her prince charming finally notice her but also got herself a boyfriend, Michael Corner. Bigger surprise was her revelation on the Hogwarts Express that she had ditched Michael but had already found a substitute: Dean. Just without any further explanation, the book ends leaving this question in the air: what the hell is going on inside Ginny's heart? Did she find out that all she felt for him was only a platonic, childish love? Or did she, full of reason, get the conclusion that, even though her feelings were real, waiting for Harry's wake would make her lose the best years of her life? Would it be worth to be alone and in pain for an uncertain future? The answer for this question is on the fifth book, and I'll point the evidences around what Hermione reveals when they were in Hogsmeade: "Ginny used to fancy Harry, but she gave up on him months ago. Not that she doesn't like you, Harry, of course".  This line is brilliant; actually we couldn't expect anything else from Jo, as she has said on a interview(CoS DVD) that sometimes she uses Hermione to speak for herself, and this line is totally in the Rowling's way: dubious. What does "not the she doesn't like you anymore" mean? This is answered for those who have watched Ginny's behavior during all year. The first clue that she is really trying to get over Harry is her relationship with Michael. According to Hermione, Ginny has met him at the Yule Ball, and they got together at the end of that year. Let's take a look at this: until the Yule Ball, we know Ginny still likes him, and this is obvious by her reaction when she heard he has asked her out. This is probably the moment when the truth finally gets into her: Harry likes someone, and it's not her. Imagine how devastated she must have been, and at this fragile moment, who enters on the stage if not Michael! If they really got along and he showed an interest on her, this chance fitted like a glove for her, a great opportunity for her to try to forget him. So, even not being head over feet about him, she accepts. And this assumption is confirmed later, when for many times she talks about her boyfriend in front of Harry and everyone else in an unpleasant way, something you wouldn't do if you really cared about the person (for example, when he and all the D.A members went to Gryffindor table looking for Harry and she, impatiently, says, "I'll tell Michael, the fool,honestly...", or even by the way she refers to him when she is telling they are not together anymore). And let's not forget what she did when they were on the Hogwarts Express at the beginning of the book. Harry is disappointed and alone as he realized his best friends were going to spend the whole journey busy with their prefect duties, and Ginny noticing that tried to make him feel better by saying "Come on, if we get a move on we'll be able to save them places". Well, if Hermione said the truth, at this time Ginny was already dating Michael, but apparently making company to Harry so he doesn't feel bad comes first. Not to mention that she tells him she's chosen Dean like she was telling it was going to rain. No emotion at all- she didn't seem happy, embarrassed, nothing. So, she's surely not in love with him as well. The funny thing about this is that all these situations happened in the presence of Harry, what makes us wonder if her attitude isn't some sort of unconscious reflex so that she makes sure he knows that, although she is dating, she is still available for him if he changes his mind. However, in my opinion, the scene that eliminates any doubt if she still likes him is the library one. Imagine the situation: Ginny comes back from her Quidditch practice tired, dirty and all, but as she sees the Easter eggs have arrived, she goes immediately after Harry all the way to the library. It's a really big effort of her part, considering they're not really good friends or anything like that. What's the hurry to give him just some ordinary Easter eggs? Wouldn't it be more logical if she first took a shower, got dressed properly and if Ron still hadn't found Harry, then she would do so? No if she wanted to make sure she was the one to do it! She only would put herself through all thatif she still had feelings for him, especially because she knew he probably was alone and was a little bit down lately, what would make this a perfect opportunity to talk to him and help him somehow. So, we can be sure that Ginny has given up on Harry but her feelings are still there! (Although now she is reacting better and in a more mature way- acting naturally around him).

Our last task, and maybe the most important, is to show why a relationship with Ginny would be the best choice for Harry. We know he's been through many experiences since he started at Hogwarts, and as Dumbledore said, he has struggled under more burdens than any student. And now, being aware of the prophecy, his feelings of isolation will increase, and he'll need to be close to people who understand what he's feeling and thinking. Ron and Hermione, who have followed good part of all this, get him well. Being so, would any girl be a good company for him? Cho has shown not. Practically all the students from Hogwarts are conscious that Voldemort has returned, but their lives are not affected by this the way Harry's is. Ginny, however, is an exception. Besides Harry, she is probably the only one who also has a sort of connection with the Dark Lord. As her family is involved with the Order, she is personally affected by his attitudes and has a lot to loose. And most important, she also knew Sirius, was with Harry in The Department of Mysteries' episode, and knows how Sirius' death has disturbed Harry. Harry needs someone who understands him and can make him feel confident, who can bring hope to him. Here is a good time to explain why Luna dating Harry would be a terrible mistake. Although she has proven that she can act normally in serious situations, most of the time she's what her name says, loony. Harry will need someone near him able to help him, not make him more confused and angry, which always happened when she was near him last book. The only time he didn't feel this way was when he felt sorry for her, and let's face it, pity is not what you want your boyfriend to feel about you. Only Ginny was able to make him cheer up on the moments he was really upset. Why not Hermione, Ron, or even Fred and George? Why was it Ginny who went to the library and gave him hope about talking to Sirius? Why was she the one who could confront him when he was yelling on everyone and stopped him believing he was being possessed by Voldemort? Why she has proven that not only she can deal with his mood-swings better than his best friends and tell him the right words to make him feel better? Because she's just what he needs, and he may have not noticed this yet, but he will. There's no way to deny this. Their future together is written in the stars. Just lie back on the floor and observe the heavens.
