Harry Potter - Family and Friends
Lily and James
Harry's parents. They were killed when he was a baby, around one year old, by the Dark Lord. Lily and James went to Hogwarts together and were in the same year. With the release of OoTP, we know that they didn't get along quite as well as some of us had thought - Lily seemed to regard James as a stuck-up, conceited jerk. James, however, had the beginnings of a pretty big crush on Lily, which we all know became a full fledged romance. They got married, had Harry, and were a part of the original Order of the Phoenix. We know that James was a descendant of the Peverell brothers, and that Lily was muggle-born. (Her sister Petunia is a muggle)James' best friend had always been Sirius, and Lily's was Severus Snape, but they fell apart as Snape got more and more involved with the Dark Arts. James and Sirius, together with Peter Pettigrew and Remus Lupin formed a little society they liked to call "The Marauders".
The Dursleys
Consisting of Aunt Petunia (his mother's sister), Uncle Vernon and his cousin Dudley, the Dursleys are as muggle as they come. They despise magic and wizardry and all things related to it, and abhor anything "abnormal". Harry grew up with the Dursleys, who mistreated him horribly, until he turned eleven and entered Hogwarts. Every summer holiday he returns to Number 4 Privet Drive, for security reasons, but he always tries to get away as soon as he can (to the Burrow usually).
Sirius Black
Sirius Black was James Potter's best friend while growing up, and they attended Hogwarts together. James and Sirius were largely considered the brightest of their year, but they weren't particularly model students - spending much of their time joking around and breaking many school rules. Sirius offered to be the Potter's Secret Keeper when they went into hiding, but James and Lily declined, opting for Peter Pettigrew instead because they thought Sirius was too obvious a choice. This proved to be a fatal mistake. Sirius is Harry's godfather, and Harry has a strong emotional bond with him, though they hadn't spent much time together, and he thought that Sirius was a crazed serial killer for the majority of his third year. Sirius was killed by his cousing Bellatrix Lestrange at the Ministry of Magic on June 1996, and left all his posessions -including his house at Grimauld Place and his ill-behaved house elf Kreacher.
The Weasleys
The Weasleys are Harry's "adoptive family". His favourite family in the world, and one he will eventually and officially become a member of after marrying Ginny (One Big Happy Weasley Family indeed!). His relationship with Mrs Weasley is very much a "mother-son" relationship; for Molly, he is "as good as" a son. And in several occasions Harry has treated Molly as a mother (in his seventeenth birthday when she gives him her uncle's wrist watch, or after Sirius' death). His relationship with Mr. Weasley is not as close, but it does have a certain fatherly touch (Harry going to Mr. Weasley's office when he had to go to the Ministry of Magic for his Hearing was a very father/son moment). Harry trusts Mr. Weasley very much and Mr. Weasley has always been fascinated by Harry's knowledge of all things muggle. He is also very close to the twins, Fred and George; he gave them all his winnings from the Triwizard Tournament to start their Joke Shop, and the year before they had given him the Marauder's Map, which has been incredibly useful to Harry and which ultimately ends up in the hands of James, Harry and Ginny's eldest son. Bill does not live at The Burrow anymore so he are not as close to Harry. However, Bill marrying Fleur and the time Harry stayed at their cottage in Year 7 probably made Harry appreciate him more. As for Charlie and Percy, he always got along rather well with them (except during the time Percy wasn't talking to his family) so it is probably fair to assume that they became good friends after Voldemort's demise.
Rubeus Hagrid
Harry and Hagrid have a very special relationship. Hagrid was the one who took Harry out of the wreckage after Voldemort killed his parents and destroyed his house in Godric's Hollow. He was also the first friend Harry ever made in the wizarding world, and he was the one who revealed to Harry that he was a wizard. He is the Gamekeeper at Hogwarts, and also the Care of Magical Creatures teacher. Harry, Ron and Hermione try to go visit Hagrid as much as they can, but they have had several nasty experiences due to Hagrid's love of monsters. Dragons, three-headed dogs, giant spiders, blast-ended skrewts and of course Grawp, his giant brother are a few of Hagrid's pets and friends.
Ron Weasley
Ron was the first friend (of the same age) that Harry maked upon entering the Wizarding world. He is his "best mate" in a "boy" sort of way. They always take the same classes, they have the same interests (they both enjoy Quidditch and verbally abusing Malfoy among others) and they are both pretty lazy students -at least compared to Hermione. Ron has accepted the fact that Harry is always in the spotlight but in a couple of occasions this had brought on some bitterness between the two. Ron's carefree attitude is very often what Harry craves, seeing as he has always had so much to deal with in his life. As Hermione once said, Ron has "the emotional range of a tea-spoon" and even though Harry is not that emotionally inmature, he is definitely in the ballpark.
Hermione Granger
Harry's other best friend: Hermione is wise, extremely clever, talented, persistant, bossy and wonderfully caring. She takes care of both Ron and Harry and is constantly saving their necks, so to speak. Born to Muggle parents, Hermione, like Harry, had to adapt to the Wizarding culture but seems to have done so fairly well. She's an avid reader and is known for her obsession with house elves and Hogwarts: A History. She is the voice of his conscience, so to speal. She is the counterbalance to Ron, the responsible one who keeps them honest. She is also quite perceptive and she knows Harry very well -too well even: when Harry started feeling something for Ginny, Hermione noticed right away.
Ginny Weasley
It took Ginny some time to be able to count herself amongst Harry's friends. She used to get so nervous around him that she didn't really spoke to him until his fourth year. But once she started, it became easy for Harry to accept her, and we discovered, as he did, that Ginny is not any girl: she has the forceful personality of her mother, the sense of humour of the twins, Ron's bravery and Bill and Charlie's general coolness. As soon as she started behaving normally she became pretty popular and started dating boys fairly soon. Harry always laughs at her jokes, and she has a very close relationship with Hermione, who has acted more than once as her confidante.
Neville Longbottom
A character introduced to us from the start, Neville Longbottom is painted as clumsy, accident-prone and not very confident in himself. His lack of self-esteem seems to sprout from the fact that his parents were tortured into insanity by Voldemort's followers and he was thereby raised by his domineering grandmother. Neville is a hidden hero, whose abilities reside deeper down - he is not without talent, he just needs to be motivated to bring them to the surface. Ever since their little adventure in the Departement of Mysteries, Harry has considered Neville to be a close friend.
Luna Lovegood
The last of the 'outer' trio. Luna is a new character - we meet her for the first time in OoTP, on the Hogwarts Express. Luna is a bit on the strange side: she believes in creatures and things that are largely considered "legends" by the rest of the wizarding world, and she carries about her an aura of "distinct dottiness". However, there is more to Luna than meets the eye. She lost her mother in a freak accident and her father is the editor of the crazy magazine The Quibbler. She is also unwaivingly loyal to Harry and always by his side in his fight against Voldemort. Harry and Ginny are so fond of her that they called their daughter Lily Luna.
Remus Lupin
Remus Lupin started out as Harry's Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher in his third year at Hogwarts. But slowly he grew in one of Harry's many father figures. He was bitten as a child by Fenrir Greyback and became a werewolf as a result, which made him unemployable most of his life. He was always much more responsible than Sirius and James, and was very fond of Lily as well. He joined the Order of the Phoenix the first time Voldemort gained power. In Half-Blood Prince we learned that he and Tonks are in love, and by the start of Deathly Hallows they were married. By that time Harry and Lupin had a few disagreements and arguments, but their friendship was stronger and when Tonks gave birth to his son, he asked Harry to be the godfather.Remus Lupin was killed by Dolohov in the Battle of Hogwarts, on May 2, 1998.
Nymphadora Tonks
Tonks was an auror who joined the Order of the Phoenix the second time around (she was too young to have joined the first). She was a feisty witch who met Harry on his fifth year. She was a metamorphmagus, which mean she could change her appearance at will. She was also incredibly clumsy.
She fell in love with Remus Lupin and during Harry's sixth year at Hogwarts she changed a lot; she became gloomy and quiet, and her hair, which used to be bright pink, turned mousy a sickly, probably because Lupin didn't want to be with her (for her own good). She married Lupin in 1997 and they had a son they named Ted, after her father. She was killed by her cousin Bellatrix Lestrange in the Battle of Hogwarts, on May 2, 1998.
