Appearance

Harry is described throughout the books as being a scrawny, pale-looking boy with bright green eyes, round glasses and messy jet black hair. His most distinctive feature however is a lightning-bolt shaped scar on his forehead. Although he started as a rather short boy, by the end of the series he grows quite a lot (not as much as Ron, but still). After his fifth year at Hogwarts Harry has another scar, shaped as the words "I will not tell lies" etched on the back of his hand.

Personality

Harry, being the central character in the books, is rather complex. He is by no means perfect, but he has an unbelievable capacity for love, as Professor Dumbledore often reminds him. Despite all that happens to him during his years at Hogwarts, despite having been brought up by the most uncaring people one could imagine, he still has the same good heart as the first time we met him. He is a loyal and devoted friend, and incredibly selfless. Again and again he has proven that he is very brave, more so than he thinks. But he has some flaws as well: he is rather rash and has an alarming tendency to act without thinking or weighing the consecuences of his actions. He is also quite strong-minded and hot-headed, although the jury's still out on whether that's a virtue or a flaw!

Brief Analysis

Harry is a complex protagonist, someone who despite his repulsive upbringing (the Dursleys), trouble past (orphaned by the hand of He-who-must-not-be-named) and overall astonishing ability to attract trouble (time and time again we see this) is a character many of us can identify with. His battle is not only that of defeating the big bad dark wizard but to find acceptance and love from the world surrounding him. In that aspect, he is like all of us, because we ourselves go on the same search to belong, sometimes all our lives. Harry provokes from readers sympathy and pity, making it easy for us to like him. Combined with his bravery, skill and innate sense of what is right and wrong, he is a surefire hero. You can't help but root for him when he's playing quidditch, cheer when he triumphs and mourn in his moments of sadness. Naturally, it is only a matter of time before the young hero grows up and is in need of affection of a different type. (Note: I am not going to go over every book and point out details about Harry's character like I've done with Ginny's since I think the majority of us understand him fairly well.)

Love Life

Harry is not the most emotionally mature person in the world, but as every boy does when he reaches a certain age, he started noticing girls more and more as the years went by. By his third year at Hogwarts he had already noticed Cho Chang, the Ravenclaw Seeker (who is a year older than him), but he wasn't yet contemplating taking any action on his infatuation. In his fourth year the fact that he had to secure a date for the Yule Ball gave him the perfect excuse to ask Cho out, but unfortunately she was already dating Cedric Diggory and Harry ended up going with Parvatti Patil.
It was on his fifth year that Harry finally got some "action"; even though Cedric's death had cast a pall on his relationship with Cho, she ended up being Harry's first kiss. Their relationship was always a bit rocky and in the end they fell apart.
But the following year Harry started to feel strangely attached to Ginny Weasley; the incident in the Ministry of Magic had obviously brought them closer but Harry wasn't quite aware of his feelings, until he saw Ginny kissing Dean for the first time. He realized then that he had feelings for her, and by the end of the year they were finally together. Ginny never gave up on him. But at the end of Year 6, Harry breaks up with Ginny for her own protection. He doesn't want Voldemort taking advantage of the fact that he cares for her so much, so even though the both of them are still in love, they agree to stop seeing each other. But of course, after Harry finally defeats Voldemort and the danger is gone, he ends up marrying Ginny and having three children with her: James, Albus and Lily.

Canon vs. Fanon

Canon!Harry and Fanon!Harry are usually fairly similar to one another (from what I've read, at least) with the exception of a few wild OOC's. He's generally pretty close to his canon persona, but sometimes an unsuspecting reader will come across JamesBond!Harry (somewhat like... leatherpants!Draco *cough*) or Super!Harry... I'm sure you all know what I mean. Strangely, a lot of writers say it is difficult to capture Harry - but at the same time he is the main character and we are provided with the most wealth of characterization and detail about him.
