Common Fanon Beliefs

This is a brief overview of certain comments/views held within the fandom that we have come across and disagreed/agreed with. They are by no means absolute in terms of "true" or "false", just our personal opinion as Harry/Ginny shippers - some topics are also explored in more depth on the rest of the site; links to each corresponding article will be available under each section.

Pre Order of the Phoenix Ideas

H/G is a fairy tale: The relationship between Harry and Ginny is nothing more than wishful thinking combined with an overdose of romanticism. There is nothing realistic about it, and having Harry fall for his best friend's younger sister is a cliché.

What isn't realistic about it? This is a book, people, and a children's book at it. JKR tends to follow literary patterns anyway, and it is a common plot to have the hero fall in love with his friend's sister. Romanticism, perhaps, is undeniable, but shipping is all about the character(s) happiness in a relationship, so what's wrong with that? As for the wishful thinking... well, we do know that Ginny has strong feelings for Harry, so it's not as farfetched as, say, Harry/Hermione, if you will, where there is no real indication of romantic feelings between the two. (Just an example)

Ginny only likes Harry because he's famous!

Doubtful. Perhaps in the beginning it began as a crush on a celebrity but Ginny's affections for Harry run deeper than that. She understands him well (see her character analysis for more details on this point) and has never shown signs of fanatical stalking, unlike Harry's extreme fan, Colin Creevy. Besides, most fangirls would not give up the opportunity to go to the ball with their celeb crush, and especially not in favour of a date who only asked her as second choice (Neville).
J.K. Rowling herself put it perfectly in the TLC/Mugglenet interview in 2005: "Initially, she's terrified by his image. I mean, he's a bit of a rock god to her when she sees him first, at 10 or 11, and he's this famous boy. So Ginny had to go through a journey as well."

--------------

A relationship between Harry and Ginny would be too perfect.

In what way? From looking at what is presented in the first 4 books, the relationship is already on rocky ground - he hass never paid any attention to her, she can't talk to him without blushing or being embarrassed and of course, there is also that little issue of Tom Riddle's diary. There are enough problems there to jumpstart a million angsty!fic plots...

Ginny is evil and shallow

How so? She was possessed by Tom Riddle, it wasn't her intention to do any of those things, so pegging her as "evil" is a bit ridiculous. Even wizards twice her age were unable to show the amount of resistance Ginny had towards Riddle - I wouldn't be surprised if she were just as good at throwing off the Imperius curse as Harry is. Also, just because she is completely starstruck by Harry in the first two books doesn't mean she doesn't have any depth. She doesn't yet know Harry as a person, all she knows is the legend so we can't really blame her for her "obsession".

Harry/Ginny is a parallel to Lily/James

You could say so, yes. Ginny has red hair and quite a temper [once again, OOTP]. James and Harry are spitting images of each other with the exception of Harry's green eyes, which he has inherited from Lily. Lily was a popular girl and so is Ginny. But I wouldn't place too much emphasis on the Lily/James and Harry/Ginny parallel, though... I mean, it is an interesting point but it is not the only thing going for Harry and Ginny and it has been rather overused...

H/G is dead! Rejoice, Ginny is over Harry! She has a boyfriend and doesn't have a crush on him anymore! It's over!

Well, no... it's not "over", because Ginny isn't "over" Harry, she has apparently "given up" on him. They mean two completely different things. Ginny's development in OOTP and her actions and sayings indicate the possibility of her being set up as Harry's future love interest. She is now much closer to Harry than she has ever been, as a friend. She is showing her true personality now and it turns out that she is much more suited for Harry than we ever thought possible, so I wouldn't be too sure it's over between them.

Post Half-Blood Prince Ideas

Harry and Ginny are just too perfect for each other, there is no argument or tension between them.

First of all, we don't really see much of what they are together in HBP because they have so little time together, but I think it's been proven that Ginny has a very forceful personality and she has always been ready to stand up to Harry whenever Harry has been rude or short with her (in OotP for example). While Hermione and Ron are sometimes afraid to confront Harry because they know he is very temperamental, Ginny doesn't seem to have a problem with it. On the other hand, it is true that their relationship isn't the "love/hate" one that Ron and Hermione have, which is great too of course. Just because they aren't fighting all day long doesn't mean there isn't tension and disagreement there sometimes.

--------------

The foundation for their relationship is shallow

Again, just because it started with Ginny being starstruck by Harry doesn't mean that she is only after his fame. They have known each other for 6 years and in the last 2 Ginny has been herself with Harry. They have had time enough to get to know each other by this point, and what Ginny knew instantly, it took Harry a few more years to discover: but he did at last!

The epilogue was corny and it's so cliché to have Harry marry Ginny in the end!

The epilogue was indeed a bit corny, but that is what J.K. Rowling wanted it be. After all, the books have a happy ending and we have known since Half-Blood Prince that Harry and Ginny were falling in love with each other, it wasn't just a crush or infatuation like Harry and Cho. So it is perfectly logical that they ended up married: they were made for each other! Also, J.K. Rowling had always intended for Harry and Ginny to end up together, so it's not like that was done in a whim!
