Past and Present

What's happened so far? This is simply a brief run-though of the progression of Harry and Ginny's relationship throughout the Harry Potter books. If you want specifics (ie, moments, quotes) you'll have to go to the Memorable Moments section. This is all canon-based, meaning no references are made to the movies.

Warning: Spoilers ahead!

Year 1 - Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
Harry and Ginny meet on the platform at King's Cross Station for the very first time. No words are actually exchanged between them, but we get a description of Ginny as being very small, timid and red haired like the rest of her family. After she learns that he is the Harry Potter, Ginny wants to go on the train and look at him (give her a break, she's 10! He's famous in their world!) but Mrs. Weasley doesn't allow it. When the train departs, Harry watches as Ginny runs to keep up with the train, 'half laughing, half crying' until they go round the corner. That is all we see of Ginny until the next year.

--------------

Year 2 - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Harry's second year at Hogwarts starts with Harry staying at the Burrow for the first time, and meeting the rest of Ron's family (his dad etc.). Of course Ginny is there as well but we find that she has such a crush on Harry she can't really talk or do anything in front of him without either stammering, stuttering or just falling off. Her brothers find it very amusing but we find out that she is not actually as shy as she appears; as Ron says "You don't know how weird it is for her to be this shy. She never shuts up normally".

In Flourish and Blotts, the Weasleys with Harry and Hermione run into Draco Malfoy, who begins to taunt Harry as usual. We see some of Ginny's true personality when she stands up to him and tells him to "leave Harry alone". Draco's father, Lucius Malfoy, slips the diary of Tom Riddle into Ginny's cauldron when no one is watching him, and the diary is mentioned briefly when the Weasleys and Harry set off for Kings Cross on September 1st (Ginny yells that she has left her diary behind and makes them go back for it).

The next notable interaction between the two occurs on Valentine's Day, when one of Gilderoy Lockhart's "Cupids" - who are really very rude and disgruntled dwarves - corners Harry in the halls and serenades him. Draco once again is present to witness this, and he makes Ginny cry by shouting that Harry didn't seem to like her valentine much.

During the rest of the year we are told that whenever an attack (from the monster inside the Chamber of Secrets) takes place, Ginny seems to be particularly affected and scared by it. Harry of course doesn't pay much attention to this as it seems only natural that a first year girl should be scared at the thought of a monster attacking students. However, by the end of the book she is taken prisoner to the Chamber of Secrets and Harry and Ron inmediately set out to rescue her. When Harry finally gets to her she is cold and unconscious and we see Harry's horror as he keeps muttering "don't be dead-- please don't be dead-". He then learns from Tom Riddle (the 16 year old Voldemort that comes out of the diary) that Ginny opened the Chamber of Secrets, that she has been setting the monster loose in the castle and giving it orders, but not of her own accord: she has been possessed by Voldemort through the influence of his diary, in which she had been pouring her heart all year. Harry finally defeats Riddle and Ginny awakens, very surprised to find Harry beside her, and very shaken by the whole experience.

--------------

Year 3 - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Almost nothing happens between Harry and Ginny in Prisoner of Azkaban, though she makes a brief appearance in Harry's train compartment on the Hogwarts Express when the Dementors are introduced (having had such a terrible experience the year before, she was particularly vulnerable to the Dementor's presence) and nearly sits on Harry's lap. We see that she still has a giant crush on Harry and even though they share a laugh when Percy sees his girlfriend on the Hogwarts Express, she still struggles with her shyness whenever Harry is around.

--------------

Year 4 - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
In Goblet of Fire Ginny starts to behave a bit more naturally when Harry is around, although she doesn't say much. The pair of them get to spend some time together as Harry goes back to the Burrow to spend the last days of the summer, and to attend the Quidditch World Cup. Ginny and Hermione are becoming friends as well, which might explain her more normal behavior.

When the school year begins, so does the Triwizard Tournament, of which Harry unwillingly becomes a champion.

In any case, we see the both of them interacting more naturally, but Ginny being a year younger doesn't really hang out with Harry, Ron and Hermione at school, so we don't see much of her until the time comes for the Yule Ball, a traditional part of the Triwizard Tournament. That's when we learn that even though she isn't showing it anymore, she still seems to have feelings for Harry. Ron, in a desperate attempt at securing dates for him and Harry for the ball, tells Ginny to just go with Harry and he will go with Hermione. Ginny then, looking quite miserable, reveals that she already said yes to Neville.

Harry on the other hand is beginning to notice Cho Chang more and more; so much so that he even asks her to the dance. Cho seems to like Harry too but she has agreed to go with Cedric Diggory, one of Harry's rivals in the Triwizard Championship. At the ball, Harry, although distracted mainly by Cho, does notice Ginny dancing with Neville.

--------------

Year 5 - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Harry is now fifteen and Ginny fourteen. Ginny has seemingly given up her crush on Harry entirely and can now speak to his face without stammering or blushing. We begin to see the true Ginny and we find out through Hermione that she is now dating a boy named Michael Corner, whom she met during the Yule Ball, the previous year. Ginny is also revealed to be quite confident and magically powerful.

The fact that Ron and Hermione are chosen as Prefects this year means that they don't have as much time together with Harry anymore; they have to attend to their prefect duties in places such as the Hogwarts Express. This often leaves Harry in the company of Ginny, Neville and their new friend Luna Lovegood. In addition to this, Harry and Ginny get to spend more time together locked up in Grimmauld Place during the holidays, as well as their weekly DA (short for Dumbledore's Army, a name Ginny came up with together with Cho Chang) meetings in which Ginny proves to be a very good DADA student.

Harry still has a big crush on Cho Chang, although Cedric's death during their previous year casts a cloud over their relationship. They kiss and are officially together for a short time, until Marietta, Cho's friend, betrays the DA members to Dolores Umbridge. The fact that Cho still defends Marietta after her betrayal pretty much breaks their relationship for good. In the meantime, Ginny's character is developed further when she is chosen as Harry's replacement following Harry's lifelong quidditch ban. We learn that she is a very good player, much to the twins and Harry's surprise.

By the end of the book, she has proven to be a true ally at Harry's side, not only in school but also in his fight against Voldemort; their journey to the Ministry of Magic along with Ron, Hermione, Neville and Luna brings them closer together and builds up the foundations for what will happen in Half-Blood Prince.

--------------

Year 6 - Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Year six brings many changes for Harry and Ginny. Ginny is dating Dean Thomas now (she broke up with Michael Corner at the end of year five because apparently he was a sore loser at Quidditch), and Harry is no longer with Cho Chang.

The year starts as usual with Harry going to the Burrow, where he spends the last weeks of his summer holidays with the Weasleys and Hermione. By this time, Ginny has become a close friend and Harry spends most of his time "playing two-a-side Quidditch in the Weasley's orchard" with Ron, Hermione and Ginny.

When the school year starts, we find that Harry is weirdly bothered by the fact that he had forgotten that Ginny doesn't really hang out with them at school; he assumes this is due to the fact that they have been spending so much time together over the summer. But during the next few chapters we get very subtle hints that Harry is slowly -and on a unconscious level-, starting to feel something for Ginny; the Amortentia smells like her ("something flowery he thought he might have smelled at The Burrow"), he stares at her sometimes ("Harry watched Ginny Weasley playing with Arnold the Pygmy Puff for a while"), he thinks about her and he doesn't seem to like the thought of her being with Dean ("Harry's thoughts strayed to Ginny (...) because she and Dean were cosily closeted in Madam Puddifoot's teashop, that haunt of happy couples. Scowling, he bowed his head...").

And then this unconscious feeling suddenly becomes real and very conscious when Harry and Ron find Ginny and Dean snogging in a deserted corridor after Quidditch practice. At this point we all discover (including Harry) that Harry is indeed having romantic feelings about Ginny, and seeing her kiss Dean awakens "the monster" in Harry's stomach, which we all understand to be a representation of his feelings for Ginny.

During the following months Harry keeps dreaming of Ginny, secretly wishing she and Dean will break up. But he is very worried about Ron's reaction if he ever was to ask his sister out, so he tries to keep his feelings at bay. But still he can't help but laugh at Ginny's jokes, walk back from Quidditch practice with her and furtively looking at her whenever he can.

Ginny finally breaks up with Dean, and Harry is left with his old struggle; he is torn between desperately wanting to ask Ginny out, and wanting to avoid loosing Ron's friendship. He keeps thinking of ways to get her on her own, but in the end none of it matters: after the final Quidditch match, which Harry has missed because he has been in detention with Snape, the Gryffindors are celebrating their victory in the common room. When Harry comes out of the portrait hole Ginny runs at him to hug him, and Harry "without planning it, without worrying about the fact that fifty people were watching" kisses her.

They are now finally together, and Harry is "happier than he could remember being for a very long time". Their time together becomes "increasingly restricted" though as Ginny's O.W.L.s are approaching fast and Harry's detentions with Snape seem to be getting longer and longer.

But unfortunately events unfold in a way that Harry could never have imagined: Dumbledore is killed by Snape at the end of the year and Harry is left in a state of utter dispair at the loss of his last "protector", a father figure, and the only person they say Voldemort has ever feared. Harry then decides that the best thing to do for Ginny is to break up with her, even though she is his "best source of comfort": he knows that being the Chosen One he must set out to kill Voldemort and destroy his Horcruxes, and he cannot bear the thought of putting Ginny in danger by continuing his relationship with her.

We know they are both still in love, but they both accept that they can't be together for the time being, and so finnishes Harry's sixth year at Hogwarts.

--------------

Year 7 - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
Year seven starts very differently from the previous six. Harry needs to be taken out of his aunt and uncle's house safely because the spell Dumbledore put on the house almost 17 years ago is about to break. After a very dangerous journey he finally arrives to the Burrow, where Ginny and Mrs Weasley are waiting for him and the rest of the Order of the Phoenix who escorted him.

At this point we learn that Harry's feelings for Ginny haven't changed over the summer; "Harry wanted to hug her, hold on to her; he did not even care much that Mrs Weasley was there". But he must stick to his decision for Ginny's good. Their time at the Burrow is spent helping Mrs Weasley get the house ready for Bill and Fleur's wedding; she is cleaning the place up but she is also actively trying to keep the trio separated because she does not want them planning their departure. But before the wedding comes Harry's birthday. He gets presents from everyone of course, but the most special one is Ginny's: she gives him a kiss that he will not soon forget. We then know that Ginny's feelings are definitely still what they were the last year. The wedding finally comes and Harry is blown away by Ginny's beauty in her bridesmaid dress, but the Ministry is overthrown that very night and the wedding is cut short by the sudden appearance of Death Eaters looking for Harry, who together with Hermione and Ron, has no choice but to disapparate out of there.

During the next few chapters Harry, Ron and Hermione set out to find and destroy Voldemort's Horcruxes, but they are completely cut off from the rest of the world. The first time they hear anything about the people they care about, they learn that Neville, Ginny and Luna have taken on the responsibility of carrying on with the DA, and have gotten into a lot of trouble by doing so with the new regime at Hogwarts. Harry is relieved to hear that nothing serious happened to them, but from that point on he gets into the habit of taking out the Marauder's Map and looking at Ginny's name moving around the castle, "wondering whether the intensity with which he gazed at it might break into her sleep, that she would somehow know he was thinking bout her, hoping that she was all right".

He keeps getting scattered reports about Ginny's whereabouts for the next months, coming from Phineas Nigellus, Bill or Fleur. But they don't see each other until the trio finally comes back to Hogwarts. The moment Harry sees Ginny he thinks "he had forgotten, or had never fully appreciated, how beautiful she was" but as the students and members of the Order of the Phoenix are getting ready to fight, he is not at all pleased to see her. He tries to get her to stay in the Room of Requirement, away from danger, but things get out of control and they are eventually separated. Ginny joins the battle and Harry is left to worry and hope she will not get hurt.

Things start to get worse as the battle unfolds, and after learning from Snape's memories that he is the last Horcrux and must therefore let himself be killed by Voldemort, Harry walks out of the castle to the Forbidden Forest, where Voldemort awaits him. He walks under his Invisibility Cloak, having made the decision to not let anyone know where he is headed. But he almost betrays himself when he sees Ginny helping a hurt student back into the castle; he wants to "shout out to the night, he wanted Ginny to know that he was there, he wanted her to know where he was going".

When he finally reaches Voldemort and knows he is seconds away from death, his last thought is of Ginny "and her blazing look, and the feel of her lips on his".

But things don't turn out as planned and Harry doesn't die. Instead, he lets the Death Eaters and Voldemort think he is dead and when they carry him back to the gates of the castle, he disappears under his cloak and the battle starts again; the Death Eaters are overpowered by wizards, centaurs and house elves, and Harry finally kills Voldemort.

We are then taken nineteen years into the future and we learn that Harry actually married Ginny and that they had three children: James Sirius, Albus Severus, and Lilly Luna.
