Analytical - Overcoming Obstacles

Before you continue reading this section, I'd just like to point out a few things. Firstly, everything that follows is an attempt to be objective while listing all the possible flaws in the Harry/Ginny ship. As it were, I happen to be an extremely die-hard H/G fan - which could mean that everything I say here is more than likely to be coloured by my bias. I won't deny that, nor will I try to convince anyone that H/G is full of holes to make up for it. I'm a firm believer, so if anything, these obstacles will be followed by a short explanation of how each issue could be invalidated. Secondly, the purpose of this section is to show that H/G shippers like myself DO see the drawbacks, as well as the advantages of shipping what we do. We're not all about fluff and fairytales. The bottom line here is: Harry/Ginny is not lacking realism. [Phrase hi-jacked from JKR herself ;)]

Tom Riddle
A whole class of issues by himself. Though it is because of him and his alter-ego(s) that several key understandings between Harry and Ginny exist, he's also a very volatile obstacle. Questions such as the following are raised:

Can Harry and Ginny get over what he's done to them?
Will he pose a threat to their relationship?
What if he kills one of them?

I've already discussed Tom in a separate section, so I'll not say everything again here. Just follow this link to read more!

The Weasleys
On the other end of the spectrum, the Weasleys are commonly portrayed as a loving, over-protective bunch, who, while adoring Harry, will slap him silly if he so much as lays a hand on their darling baby sister. Of course, the majority of such musings have been disproved by OoTP, but I'll discuss them briefly here anyway:

Isn't Harry too much of a member of the family to think of Ginny as a potential love interest?

Actually, no. I don't believe in this. Harry doesn't treat Ginny like a little sister, he treats her like a girl who has a crush on him. He's nice to her, but not overly friendly - the way he is with the male Weasleys. Aside from that, it seems to me like he sees Hermione as more of a sister figure than Ginny. No matter what the H/H'ers say, the dynamic between Harry and Hermione is platonic. JKR said it, and I stand by it.

Wouldn't Ron/F&G/other Weasley brothers kill him if he starts dating Ginny?

At one point, this seemed possible. However, after OoTP, I really don't think Ginny's brothers will harrass Harry if H/G happens. We already know Ron, for one, won't mind - he probably would rather see Ginny with Harry than with anyone else - and the Twins strike me as the sort to tease more than attempt to pull them apart. Charlie and Bill are a bit too distanced from Ginny (both in terms of age and geography) to be able to meddle in the affair. I'd say the greatest obstacle would be their getting together, not someone trying to stop them...

The Crush

After Harry's ignored Ginny for four years, do you really think he'll just suddenly sit up and notice her?

Good point. It does seem unlikely that Harry will suddenly discover he's fallen in love with Ginny, doesn't it? Even I realise that's not going to happen. What could happen, however, is a slow progression of affection: you can already see it beginning in OoTP. For Harry and Ginny to develop any sort of relationship requires:

1) Friendship
2) Trust
3) Respect
4) Understanding
5) Care

Does Ginny even like Harry anymore?

It's the opinion of many H/G shippers that yes, Ginny still does like Harry. Why do we think so? Well, firstly, throwing a four year crush out the window isn't easy. Ginny has 'given up' on Harry - meaning she's decided that she doesn't want to pursue him any longer - but it doesn't mean that she doesn't care about him. On the contrary, Hermione emphasises that Ginny still 'likes' Harry.

Personalities

Shyness could be a big obstacle for the both of them, though generally Ginny isn't, and Harry is more of the quiet type than he is shy. Put them together in a romantic situation, however, and you get a boy who spends his time fighting the greatest Dark Wizard of the times (who isn't exactly a smooth operator, either) and a girl who used to hide and do silly things whenever he was around.

What I'm afraid of is that while Harry and Ginny may end up falling in love with one another, they may not get the chance - or seize it - to express those feelings.

Then again, Ginny has never verbally confirmed that she likes Harry, nor has she ever explicitly told him. It's obvious that she'd been taken with him, of course, but nothing amounts out of that if no one makes a move.

Is it not a possibility that Harry will choose bachelorhood?

There is always the possibility that Harry, the chivalrous gentleman, will choose fulfilling his destiny over romance. Such speculations have been made all over the fandom: Harry may be alone by the end of the series because he won't want to endanger the life of his potential significant other. It's a good point, and after the events of OotP (notably Sirius' death) Harry may be more aware of the danger he poses towards his loved ones. Of course, he's always known that Ol' Voldie is after him, but perhaps Cedric Diggory's death didn't truly hit home with him... after all, he did date Cho briefly, didn't he? However, this time it's a lot worse, and it hit him much harder. We can't be sure what will happen during/after the summer of OotP, but one could easily hypothesize that Harry has witnessed too many deaths of people he cared about and will decide to save himself the pain by closing off his heart.
